there is a clunking noise in the engine near the belts what could this be.

it makes a loud clanking niose under the hood near the beltz.

When the engine is cold, remove the belt and start the engine to see if the sound is gone. Only run it for a few seconds because it will overheat. If the sound is gone, check all belt driven accessories.
