I was recently hit in the rear while stopped

It was a minor impact collision. Almost immediately afterward my car began to run poorly. My mechanic said the repair was copstly and if it was related to the collision it would be covered by insurance.

Even a minor impact with most any cars now will do damage on the way a car runs. There are sensors in the trunk as well as a sensor that will shut the fuel off upon impact. Take it to a BMW repair shop and have it checked out.
