why is it randomly overheating?

I have a1995 BMW and overheats randomly.sometimes as soon as i start the vehicle and sometimes hours later then sometimes not at all.

What are the symptoms? If it's doing it when you start the engine, you know it's not hot yet. It takes a good five to ten minutes to warm up, and longer to overheat.
