I have a 94 volvo 850 t and its smoking pretty bad I think its the rear seal in my turbo but someone told me it could be my piston ring is there a way to find out without taking the turbo off?

Very excessive smoke and heavy oily deposits in the exhaust and often oil specks on the back of the car will be a failed turbo, failed rings will burn oil but at a much less a rate, also rings normally fail over a period of time and turbos tend to fail quickly if there is a problem.
