Hard Start Problem

There are a number of different things that might be causing this. You should first have your codes checked as that might give you a hint as to what might be going on.
Here are a few things that need to be checked.
1) Your fuel pressure. If it is low it might cause a problem like this.
2) Your idle air control valve. It is what keeps your car running then you take your foot off the gas.

May I know how to check the fuel pressure?Can we check it our self?There is no scanner tools at my area that why cannot check for the code.

You can check it yourself. If you go to an auto parts store just ask for a fuel pressure gauge and tell them what kind of car you have. They should be able to sell you one that will fit your car.

If the problem is because of fuel pressure then what should I do?Which part I need to change or repair?Is it high chance for the IACV to cause these problem also?

If the fuel pressure is low then it is most likely because of a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump.
There is a good chance that the IAC is bad, but there is no way for me to tell. You could take it off and clean it. That might help.

Please correct me if I've misunderstanding for the IACV location from the photo attached.Any suggestion for the cleaner can use for cleaning up the IACV?

I can't quite tell if that is the IAC or the throttle position sensor. It looks like the TPS because it looks like it's adjustable. It might be under that or on the other side.

Am I correct?Please advice me.

Did I need to dismantle the whole total body if i want to clean it up?Or just unscrew down the IAV?Anyway to confirm if the IACV is down?

Just unscrew the IAC. Clean it with carburetor cleaner.

This result consider as idle or not?I've try clean up the Throttle body and also the IACV and get this result better than previous but still have problem with start up.Any other suggestion?

Same car as my previous post(Air filter housing).

Before i took it in for the engine re-build, it would start "one kick", whether hot or cold, even after not driving it for a week plus. I could even turn the key with my hand through the window and it would start, no revving required.

Now, hot or cold, i have to continuously crank the engine for a bout 5-8 secs, with my foot a bit on the throttle, before it comes to life. Once it does start, there is a rough idle, sort of misfire for about 5 more seconds, then a smooth idle. Thereafter its smooth to drive, plenty power and acceleration.

The mechs say they took the car to a service shop for "tuning" before they delivered it back to me. I'm not sure what this "tuning" exactly was.

Any ideas?

Check fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge, most Toyota's require a special tool set since they do not have a fuel pressure test port. Also check the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line for the presence of gas, which would indicate a ruptured FPR diaphram.

OR, spray some starting fluid in throttle body and if it starts right up for a few seconds, then fuel issue, if not then ignition problem.

Ask the installer to define what they exactly mean by "tune".

The "tune-up" was basically checking timing & co emissions etc.

I took it back to the service shop, had to leave it overnight as this problem "can only be solved when the car is cold". The mechanic says he "set" the choke on the car.

When i collected, it was starting perfectly, now, 1 day later, same problem.

Update....

I shorted pins TE1 and E1 on the diagnosis connector. The "check engine" light gave me a code 24, which is "air intake temp sensor" according to

I disconnected the sensor, now car is starting nicely. Could be a coincidence, will have to see.

I will drive around tomorrow and see if the problem comes back.

Any harm in driving for a short period of time with the sensor disconnected?

I am having a tough time finding the air temp sensor. Is there a way to test it using a multimeter?

I would like to know that it is definately faulty (and not a electrical short in the car) before having to order from outside the country.

Hard start on mornings and the rev meter shoots a and trembles in a stuck position . when it does start it not a smooth idle even with acceleration. seems like something is sticking but I generally have this issue early in the morning

Have you had the engine tuned up recently? Its sounds like the spark plugs need replacing. Please get back to us so it will help others

Replaced spark plugs and still had the same issue so I changed the computer and that did the trick

hello, in winter my corolla has troublem reaching 50 km/h to do that i have to press hard on the accelerator. In summer I hardly reavh 40km/h on hill. It didn't do that before an year. All this happened sice I went on a very steep hill with hard acceleration.
I tried start the car on Neutral engine starts smmoth and nice. What is the problem.

A good starting point is to change fuel filter and have fuel pressure checked with a mechanical gauge.

While it could also be an ignition problem, I would start with fuel pressure.

Try to isolate the problem (fuel vs ignition) rather than throwing parts at it.

When it wont start, you will have to check for spark, fuel supply & pressure, do a scan if it is EFI, this you have not stated..... i feel it will be an electrical issue that you are chasing here.

I have a 93 toy. corolla and i have replaced the wires cap rotor and spark plugs and changed the oil and filter.. and i am going crazy car runs rough , there isnt no ticking except the injectors and there isnt no smoke what so ever.... I was told heads and others tell me they not sure what the problem is.. SOOO my last person told my change the distibutor because of contact issues.. I am at wits end here, because this car is slow to start but takes off when it hits second gear and does awsome .. Does anyone have any ideas here???? also there is a somewhat gas smell from there exhaust..

Start by checking the timing.

Also do you have a check engine light?

Yes i t does and its a exhuast issue but what would cause the running hard issue with the motor while it is in drive or any other gear for that matter.. distribitor??

Short Te1 and B1 on diagnostic link with engine on (not running) SES light will flash codes stored in ECM.

Had a engine light come on, took it to a repair shop could not fix. Took it to a Toyota dealer service center they had it for 4 days and could not fix the problem either. The car is a 1992 Toyota Corolla DX sedan with 200500 miles, when the car is cold on first starting up it runs rough for about 15 seconds and then it run great. After start up tried to give it some gas and has no power until 15 seconds warm up then it runs great and has power after I step on the gas. Replaced the coolant temp sensor as the code read it was bad, but it is still rough when the engine is cold, until it warms up after a few seconds?

check cold start timer switch in thermostat housing see pics. also if it has a slight exhaust leak prior to O2 sensor may cause it.

Removed cold start injector and clean a bit, hit the injector where it slides open reinstalled, removed the air cleaner and started the car and it run good. No rough starting step on gas had power. but still check engine light is on???

scan for codes and go to obd 1 to find out what problemis....

What is obd 1?

that is the computer system in your car today's car use obd2 look on our site here under repair and service, obd codes then go to obd1 when you find the code.

Dear sir, Thanks for the wonderful service your doing. I am from Philippines and thus know very little about the cars out here. I bought my Toyota corolla 1991 model year 1995 second hand and I had the regular oil changes done every 15000km and cleaning of aircon every 6 months.
Now my problem is I did not use my car for almost a month due to engine problem. The last time I use my car, the car is dragging and the engine automatically shut off. Every time happen this thing, I will continue to start again the engine ( hard start) before you start the engine, after a miles the problem comes again.
I already change the Spark plug and cleaning the carburator system but the problem stil there. Other mechanics advice me to change the engine than to repair the engine, because I will spend to much money for the repair than to buy a new second hand engine.

Whenever you "store" a car or leave it set for extended periods of time, you MUST put a fuel stabilizer in it. Gasoline will deteriorate over time and will cause varnish to build up and clog up everything.

Try a can of Seafoam in the tank, cost is about $10.

Check fuel pressure with a mechanical gauge, see if it is a bad fuel pump.

If you have to replace engine, find a used one.
