From your picture, it appears the peg on the right side might be tapered to allow it to be snapped into place. Otherwise, you might look for a "pull-your-own-parts" salvage yard to see if they have a car like yours to experiment on. Do a search for "Pull-A-Part" and see if they have a yard near you. They're very clean and well-organized.
The next approach would be to get a copy of the manufacturer's service manual. Aftermarket manuals like Haynes and Chiltons won't go into things like that.
