car wont reverse

my 1994 Subaru Legacy wont go in reverse and sounds like a helicopter when running,what could this be?

If the helicopter noise is from the transmssion and varies according to vehicle speed and goes away when transmission is shifted to neutral while coasting, I believe you would need a new transmission as this one has a fault internally.
