the alternator has 3 wires. one from starter post for batt, a brown wire for the charge light and a brown with white stripe for batt voltage. what pins on the connector at the alt.do the brown and brown/white connect to?

Refer to diagram.

Brown is for the L terminal.
Brown/White is F terminal.

Thank you so much for the diagram. The wires were pulled out of the connector and i didn't want to put them in the incorrect positions. You were a great help. I couldn't find that diagram anywhere. Thanks again. Jim
