How do I know when the starter on my 94 saturn is gone?

Let's first start with the problem your having and go from there. There are a lot of symptom's they can have. Do you have a multimeter to do some checking?

No I don't. The deal is when I start my car it turns overs just briefly and then just winds up without turning over. I can usually get one start per day out of it. What would you do? It's also stuck at a friends house right now so if you got a tip, like hitting the starter with a hammer, that would be great.

So the starter justs spin's without turning the engine over?If so bad starter you can try to hit it with a really long extension and hammer while cranking it. Just be carefully not to ground the hot lead on the starter.

The big red positive battery cable going to starter or the little purple wire going to the starter. Shorting those wire's to ground with the extension don't do it. That's what I mean.
