If the pump is running, either the wires are switched on the motor, in the connector, or the supply and return hoses are mixed up. I recently replaced the pump in my '88 Grand Caravan and both terminals were the same size on the motor. The terminals are the same size in the connector, and even if you bought the complete assembly, there's no guarantee someone didn't mix them up at the factory.
My van didn't start either the first time. I thought I watched carefully, but I switched the two hoses by mistake. The return hose is slightly smaller diameter, but they interchanged easily. If necessary, pull both rubber hoses off the metal pipes, then see if fuel gets pumped out. If it does, switch the hoses.
