need to troubleshoot engine knocking sound

trying to repair a 1994 Mitsubishi Montero sr the engine has a constant metallic knocking sound doesn't seem to get louder with acceleration. need to know what could possibly cause this. am hoping it is not a rod what could i check first and how could i rule out the rods? dont want to tear etire engine apart if i can avoid it. help please

Where's the knocking sound coming from? Top? Bottom? Side? Front? Rear?

Does it speed up and slow down with engine speed or stay constant?
