Need to troubleshoot engine knocking sound

Trying to repair a 1994 Mitsubishi Montero sr the engine has a constant metallic knocking sound doesn't seem to get louder with acceleration. Need to know what could possibly cause this. Am hoping it is not a rod what could I check first and how could I rule out the rods? Dont want to tear etire engine apart if I can avoid it. Help please

Where's the knocking sound coming from? Top? Bottom? Side? Front? Rear?

Knocking sound comes from bottom rear best I can tell

Does it speed up and slow down with engine speed or stay constant?
