The car was sitting around not being used for about a year. I got it a new battery and about ten minutes after running it it started to fun hot and smoke from the hood. The check engine light came on as well. What can I do to fix it?

Best regards

Put it out of its misery. Your description makes me think there are multiple problems, BIG problems. Starting with a blown head gasket and probably a roached water pump.
