Engine is hesitating when in traffic

Mazda 323 sputters sometimes while driving. When in stop- go traffic; car bogs and dies out, it takes anywhere from three to five minutes before it can start up again. Seems like it gets too much or too little fuel; I don't know which. Sometimes when accelerating the car doesn't go like it should; as if it cannot pick up speed right away. What could be the problem?

Next time it refuses to start don't wait check for fuel and spark
