In side the transmission there is a valve body that re directs transmission oil to activate drive, reverse and park is a mechanical lock system, electrical solenoid operated valves control these functions, a transmission scan will detect and problem with the electrical side, but I feel that your problem may be mechanical, a scan would be the first place to start with any diagnoses.
