i took it to the garage and they told me it was the neutral safety switch.
so i bought a new neutral safety switch and without removing the old one i simply plugged in the new one and it wouldn't start the car. does it have to be mounted to start?

You have to mount it so that it tracks the tranny gear where it suppose to be-whether be Park and Neutral if you have no power to the switch -check/test the ignition switch
