what does the oil filter connect to and do they leak often?

on a 1994 jeep cherokee 4.0 ho motor, what does the oil filter screw into and does that piece have a gasket where it attaches to the motor?

to an adapter and yes has O ring to block gasket. check to see if threaded nipple that filter attaches is tight
