why are my gears meshing together/wont go into gear

i did an engine swap and took off transmisson and put back on now it wont go past forth gear so no fith or reverse and noow all the four gears mesh and like i can switch from 3rd to 1st w/out going into the neutral postion why might this happen

Check that the selector cables are secure, check shifter quadrant for excessive wear.

did you mess up the linkage? what had to be disassembled to get trans out?

did you drain trans fluid and then replace when done?

sounds as if the selector linkages or cables are loose, look at this first.
