Sounds like a problem with the hydraulic portion of the clutch. They develop leaks and when they run low on fluid, the suck air into the system.

Can a leak in the brake line cause a problem with the clutch?

No, but it may not be a brake line. It might be the clutch line. They use the same fluid.
