I was wondering how long it would take to remove and replace the rear engine seal on my 94 c-3500 gmc 454 cubic inch automatic transmission. I am going to replace it myself and need to know if it will take a whole day or just a few hours. I have never replaced one. I know there are sometimes complications and more things that may need done when taking it out, but I just need an estimate in how long it would take to take the rear engine seal out and put a new one in.

If you are doing it yourself, it may take longer than a day. You need to remove the transmission.

Did you buy the new rear main seal yet? If im not mistaken, I believe these have an oil slinger sleeve that will also need to be installed on the crankshaft. If yours has one, it will be a metal sleeve looking piece, and usually requires a special installer to press on the crank evenly. I cant find any info whether your year has one or not. Also, is this a 4x4? Without a lift, I would say devote an entire day to replacing this seal. Keep us updated.
