Why is the check engine light on & getting less gas mileage?

My 1994 Geo Metro has the check engine light on and since then I am getting less gas mileage and it hesitates when I accelerate. Lately it has started stalling when I try to get it going and into drive, until it get's warmed up.

An error has been detected in the engine management system and you need to rectify the problem to get the MIL to go off and get the gas mileage back.

You would need to retrieve the trouble codes to find out which component circuit is at fault.
