engine will not shut off?

Car will not shut off when key is turned off. Switch has been replaced, but did not solve the problem

There is a sliding rack type piece of linkage that connects the ignition lock to the electrical switch and they commonly break. It will then push on but not pull back off. The steering column will have to be disassembled to access this part.
