Why does the power steering work only with high RPMs

1994 dodge ram 3500 5.9 diesel power steering only works with high RPMs I had a leak on the pressure hose and have fixed it. Any ideas on what to do?

Make sure the belt is tight. If it is, the pump itself is most likely bad.

You have a hyrovac assembly that runs the power steering and brakes. The power steering pump is at the bottom of the motor and does not have a pullry.

Before replacing anything, get the system flushed out completely of dirt and debris. When was the last time you changed the fluid? Like engine oil, it needs to be serviced regularly.

If the pump was bad, your brakes would be hard as well. The steering box may be the culprit.
