gas consumption

1994 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN

I have a 94 chevy surburban on which I changed the motor. It sucks gas and backfires while running. is it a computer problem?

It could be caused by many things. Make sure there are no major vacuum leaks. Check the catalytic converters. Check to make sure the plug wires are on in the proper order. Check to make sure the fuel pressure and regulator are working properly. Check ignition timging if you had the distributor out.
