This fuse blows immediately after starting the car. I understand that this fuse, when blown, also prevents the alternator from charging the battery. So finding the reason for the blown fuse is very important. I have and can use a VOM; just don't know where to start. Can you please give me some tips?

Your first step will be to identify specifically which fuse it is and then look at a wiring diagram to determine specifically what it powers. The DVOM isn't going to be much help in this situation at all. You will have to systematically start disconnecting components that are fed by that fuse until the fuse stops blowing. This is not an easy process and may not be for you to do.

The fuse is labeled "gauges". The manual indicates several items that it controls; gauges, TCC, cluster telltales, audio warning system, rear defogger relay, brake transaxle shift interlock, and multiport fuel injection. With the key in the on position engine not running the gauges operate fine. After starting the engine, car in park, the fuse blows in about ten seconds. The TCC shouldn't be the problem as the torque converter clutch relay doesn't throw until the car hits third gear. I would suspect the MFI. Is there a way to check it?

MFI is a system, not a component.

You are going to have to isolate the source by disconnecting things on the circuit.

Here is the wiring diagram..
