i need to know where the alternator is located on the vehicle and how hard is it to replace

GM puts them all over depending on the engine size. Follow the belt to the generator. It will be the one with the smallest pulley. If you already have the replacement, you know what it looks like.

These have a real high failure rate. To reduce the number of repeat failures, replace the battery at the same time unless it is less than about two years old. Due to their design, these generators produce huge voltage spikes that can destroy the internal diodes and voltage regulator, and interfere with the many computers on the car. As the battery ages it loses its ability to dampen and absorb those spikes.
