When you first start car it wont go into gear unless you rev the engine then it will shift into forward and reverse but then when you come to a stop after driving and you let the rooms drop under 1000 it will go out of gear until you rev it up again and it will jerk into gear.

make sure the trans fluid is full but sounds like it may need an oaverhaul have a trans guy look at it.

Put a bottle of Lucas Stops Slip in it and cross your fingers first. It's worked for me on these cars in the past.
