Do you know if water pump has been replaced? Did you replace thermostat? How does coolant look? Does this problem happen only when driving? Or does it happen all the time whether you are driving or idling?

Are cooling fans coming on? Is radiator ok, get it flow tested, are both hoses hot with the thermostat open?

Water pump has never been replaced, but waterpump not leaking. Thermastat was changed, no coolant because when car runs hot it flows out of the overflow tank. Cooling fans come on when car gets to normal running temperature. Radiator was rodded out and tanks replaced. Top hose is hot and did not try bottom hose. Also had pressure check done on radiator. The car runs hot during idle and while driving.

If one hose is not hot the fins on the water pump which are responsible for circulating the coolant may be disintegrated away, so you need to check that other hose. And also the coolant spilling out the overflow tank is normal for when the engine is running hotter than it should be.
