93 pontiac firebird 5 speed had low reading this morning on the battery meter in dash by 7pm the reading was near zero. Upon jumping the battery, the car went into an excessively high idle so I shut it off. Interior speedometer light needs occasional dash smacking aka fonzie style to work. Needing general thoughts as to what may be the most likely root cause of my current problems. Thanks

Total voltage loss causes the computer to lose it's adapted memory. When a new battery is installed,it takes a period of normal driving for the computer to relearn the idle and fuel mixture strategy.
