Transmission goes into "limp" mode after 3 miles.

I have the 2.5L 3sp.automatic 1993 Plymouth Acclaim. Fluid levels are normal.After traveling a short distant transmission drops into low gear.
Could this be the transmission solenoid?

The three speed is not a computer-controlled transmission. For shifting problems, check the fluid level first.
