I want to change spark plugs and wires.
Back in the 1960s all you had to do was grab the base of the wire with your fingers and pull it off the plug.
Does it now take a special tool, or is there a snap lock on the ends?

On the end of the spark plug cable there is a snap lock connector. It should still come off fine, but they are a tight fit. If the wires have not been removed for a long time then they can stick on pretty good. The first thing you need to do is get them to twist. If you can loosen them that way then you can pull them off much easier.
