1993 Mazda MX3, 1.6 ltr. inline 4, SOHC, 5-speed manual transmission. I have disconnected/loosened everything around the crankshaft, and it will not come loose. Do I have to drop the tranny, or am I missing something? Engine is still mounted in car.

the trans must come out of the car and the flywheel removed.
the front section, you must remove the timing belt and all components as well. it is much easier to pull out the motor and do it on an engine stand.
