auto trans wont shift in third or reverse

the shifter moves through the gears but doesnt engage 3rd or reverse

Make sure it has enough of the correct fluid. Make sure the fluid is a nice bright red color. If it's a nasty brown color, or smells burnt, have it flushed. Otherwise, you have internal transmission problems.
