Fluid is leaking on alternator to short it. What usually causes this?

could be oil from the valve covers, power steering from hoses or pump among many other places.

clean the engine in that area. drive the vehicle for a few miles and recheck to see the color of the fluid and to see if there are traces for where the fluid originated.
By the way, which fluid have you recently checked and it was low?
