what causes the oil to leak arond the housing of the oil filter

How fast? The filter could just be not fully tightened, or there could be a double gasket if the old one got stuck in place and overlooked. Usually that second gasket will blow out causing sudden loss of all oil. A loose filter will often cause a slow leak.
