Sounds like your idle speed is too low, does it do it only when the blower is turned on? Or when the heater is set on hot or cold? Your a bit vague on that part.

May be a IAC module that is bad and not idling up higher when more load is put on the battery.

I found the problem & got seriously lucky finding it.
Seems the brand new distributor had a bent pickup coil cover that was arcing & shorting out #2 & #6 so they would fire intermittently.
Shoved a screwdriver down the distributor, bent the cover back a tad so it wasn't rubbing. Threw it all together & cranked it. Purrs like a cat now :)
Thanks to all that helped on the one!
Lots of great suggestions & ideas
Also, learned not to buy a distributor made in China!

This is a 1988 Ford F-150 with a 302/automatic.
After warm up, it begins to surge, while driving,
or in park. Makes no difference. The idle will
advance considerably. Sometime for a second, and
other times for 5/6 seconds. TPS/Idle Air bypass
valve? Just a guess.

I had the same problem try changing your TPS switch make sure your write down the number from the back of it ie:74, 75, 76, 78 don't mix the numbers. I didn't do this I assumed, after the third one I got the right one Ford has several of these. You can't return electrical parts. Don't let it go to long it will break the carrier in the tranny.

Thanks Loggerhead. I was leaning toward the TPS.
I appreciate the heads up on the numbers. I will be
sure to identify the right part number. I'll let ya know
if this corrects the situation.

I just installed a new computer from a company online that says they program it with ford software under license.
I replaced the oxygen sensor
the one I took out and my exhaust system are filled with thick carbon soot.

I started it and let it idle for 1 hour

took it for a drive and it shook me back and forth when I pressed on the gas pedal and wouldnt run smoothly unless I carefully feather the gas pedal then it backfired

My 99 150 did this so I took it to the dealer so he could hook it up on the computer and then test drive it. It cost $77.00 and the only thing that was messed up was the #3 spark plug I had changed them a year before and guess one of them was faulty. So I would say if you have done all you can do go to the dealer

To begin last week I decided to put a new fuel filter in. After installed drove 30 miles engine started to cut out and buck and surge. Fuel filter that I had taken off had some black looking fuel on the pump side not the engine side. From there I changed cap, rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, still same bucking and surging, then proceded to check fuel pressure 35psi at idle on both tanks 40-45 at high rpm. Changed fuel pressure regulator still no change. Changed ignition controle module, no change. No check engine light. Tested for codes any how, no codes present, checked tempature sensor, tested within normal range. Changed fuel filter again, no change.
Checked to make shure check engine light was working, works properly. Fuel pumps are new. Pulled spark plugs, shows signs of white burn pattern(mixture to lien). O2 sensor reads within proper voltages, no check engine light.
Some times when parked for a while and when restarted it will run semi smooth for a couple minutes but will begin to shake like it is missing cylinders and then when drivin begin to buck and jerk. Im running out of ideas. I will replace coil pack next and maybe check mass air flow sensor and map sensor next and also check vacum pressure to see if I may have a vacum leak that I have not detected yet. Any input to this would help out im starting to go bald from pulling out my hair! Thank you

The MAF sensor is a big source of driveability problems on Fords. Try cleaning it with the proper cleaner first to see if it reacts. Check for vacuum leaks in the intake area first. Does it run ok cold then rough when it warms up or is it rough all of the time?

I started the truck this morning and it ran fine for about 2 miles, then it began to buck and jerk it feels more like the engine cuts out or a stutter and it was the same after work 8 hours later so im leaning to when it starts to get warm it begins to act up.
Its better when at idle but as soon as you put it in gear and do a slow brake stand it sounds like it misses. So either maf sensor, map sensor, failing injectors or what ever else it may be.

Try using MAF cleaner to see if it makes a difference in the way it runs

This pickup does not have a MAF sensor.
Since my last posting we have replaced the distributer, temp sender, and still it idles good and run when cold but as soon as it warms up its buck and jerks but now it does it when you load the engine down(ie. Climb hill, stomp on it or just hold it at a constant speed)

If you have access to a scanner, do an injector waveform check on it when it is hot, have seen one or two borderline injectors make the entire truck run like you describe. If there arent any vacuum leaks and fuel pressure and volume is good, you have replaced the entire ignition system, sounds like you are left with injectors

What is making my Ford F-150 surg in park? It starts fine. It will not Idle. It just ruuuun ruuun, ruuun. When I put it in gear it stalls! The charge gauge goes back and forth as it reves up and down. If I hold accelerator lightly it idles smooth. I have to give it gas lightly to shift int gear. Once in gear it stays started for driving If I stop and put it in park. Ruuuuuun, ruuuuun. Stall.

Sounds like the throttle body may need to be cleaned out and possibly the IAC module needs checking.

Check to make sure the pintle moves freely.

If thats all good spray around all air hoses and vaccum lines with brake cleaner. If idle changes you have a vaccum leak.

1991 f150 4x4 302efi 5.0 engine surges while idling and/or driving! Clears up when given more gas and the volt meter fluctuates. Have changed wires, plugs, efi module, timed it and still same problem

Check the idle air control valve. Also, check for vacuum leaks. NOTE: the volt meter is doing that because the RPM's are going up and down.

Have you checked fuel pump pressure? Also, 1985 was awhile ago. I can't remember if Ford had gone to fuel injection at that point or still used a carb. Let me know on that. Finally, has the check engine light come on? When was the last tune up? Any vacuum leaks and have you checked the EGR to make sure it isn't plugged with carbon?

Let me know.
Joe
