Some scan tools will provide a KOER self test for Ford vehicles. During this KOER test it is required that you press the brake pedal and turn the steering wheel a 1/4 turn when the test is running. If you don't do this the test will flag an issue such as the brake.
There are a few components that can cause poor engine performance specifically with acceleration. No getting enough fuel or improper timing, restricted fuel injectors or restricted exhaust and a sensor (throttle positioning sensor) acting up causing poor engine performance.
A simple test with a vacuum gauge can tell you if the engine is mechanically sound and if the air fuel mixture is decent and if the exhaust is restricted.
During engine performance diagnostic ruling out components will narrow parts down to what is causing the poor acceleration.
