I've tried everything except timing. The fuel pump, tps, vacuum, fuel pressure, plugs wires and cap rotor even the distributer. Back in may last year I changed the timing gears for an extended trip I was taking, we got the engine at tdc #1 combustion removed the harmonic and the front cover changed the gears and front seal, put it back together and then found that the timing mark wasnt at the tdc mark. When we were taking off we noticed that the mark was right but the dots didnt line up so we turned the crank by bumping the stater till we felt the compression from #1 cyl the marks were right on then. But when we put the cover back on thats when we noticed the timing mark was 180 degrees off. We bumped the starter and got the #1 tdc just to be sure, but mark was 180 off. Van had been running great til about a month ago. Can the timing be set on the #6 or what ever plug is compression at the mark? Thanks

NOT BEING THERE

WERE THE MARKS LINED UP ON THE OLD SET WHEN YOU REMOVED THEM (NOT THE HARMONIC MARKS)

MAYBE YOUR BUMPING HAS PASSED THE MARKS?

DO IT BY HAND....WITH A WRENCH OR RATCHET

WHEN YOU GET THE "SPIT"----SLOW DOWN AND CONTINUE ON TO YOUR ZERO MARKSTOP!

SEE PICS 1 AND 2 (THIS IS MY '77 CJ 5)

NOW THE POSSIBILITY OF THINGS HAVE TURNED TO FECAL MATTER?

LOOK AT THIS ONE----THIS MIGHT COULD EXPLAIN A HARD TO FIGGER OUT ISSUEI SHOW YOU, FURTHER ON DOWN, HOW TO *****"WORK THINGS BACKWARDS" ******TO SEE IF THE BALANCER IS THE PROBLEM

BEFORE YOU BUY ONE (TALK TO ME) BUT SEE IF YOU CAN COMPARE THE POSITIONS OF YOUR KEY-WAY AND TIMING MARK WITH A NEW BALANCER.....LAYING ONE ON TOP OF ANOTHER

DON'T PULL THE GEARS AND CHAIN OFF!!!!

THE #1 PISTON COMES UP 2 TIMES IN A 4 CYCLE ENGINE CYCLE

THE PISTON DON'T CARE! WHERE IT'S AT.......0 OR 180.....IT DON'T MATTER TILL IT'S HOOKED TO THE CHAIN AND CAM

SO IF YOU INSTALL THE CRANK GEAR (KEYED ON) ROTATE THE CRANK AND POINT THE CRANK GEAR'S MARK TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE CAM'S SHAFT THE PISTON WILL BE UP AND AT "ZERO" ON A "GOOD BALANCER" (IF IT WERE ON)

FORGET THE CHAIN FOR NOW!

STICK THE CAM GEAR ON----ROTATE MR. CAMSHAFT TILL IT'S MARK IS POINTING TOWARD THE CRANKSHAFT

THE TWO SHAFTS ARE NOW "IN SYNC"

DO NOT MOVE THE SHAFTS!

NOW PUT THE CHAIN ON

ALL IS GOOD

IS IT POSSIBLE TO SORTA STICK THE HARMONIC BALANCER ON TO SEE IF IT IS LINED UP ON ZERO......BEFORE YOU MOVE THE ENGINE?

IF IT'S OFF----IT HAS SLIPPED----GET A NEW ONE!

I HAVE MORE.......IF YOU NEED IT!

GOT SOME PICS OF MY "CLOYES TRUE DOUBLE ROLLER TIMING SET" I PUT ON MY JEEP A FEW MONTHS BACK (IT HAS MULTIPLE MARKS TO "HONE IT IN" FOR HOW YOU USE YOUR VEHICLE) I SET IT ON THE "STANDARD MARKS"

LAST 2 PICS ARE THE OLD AND NEW CHAINS....THE CLOYE'S HAS BEARINGS IN EACH ROLLER.....I WAS HESITANT IN SPENDING $140 VS $30.............I SEE THE LIGHT NOW!.......THE ROLLER IS DID MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN SOUND AND PERFORMANCE OVER THE OEM SET.......SPOTA LAST A LOT LONGER TOO!
