The battery has to have a full charge before you can test, anything. Check for applicable trouble codes, first. You should be able to check mil codes, yourself. You turn the key, just till the dash lites come on, no further. Cycle the key, on--off, on---off, on, then The mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes. With older vehicles, it is possible, the mil won't work, but, try it anyway.
You need to check if the charging system is working? Even if the battery and alternator are new, there could be a problem, with wiring circuits?
You can check for battery drain, the old way is to take battery cable loose, use test lite between cable and battery p[osts, everything off. If the testlight comes on bright, you have a drain. Pull/replace fuses one at a time, when you pull the fuse on the faulty circuit, the drain goes away. Be sure you check for lights that may be left on, best time to check is in the dark.
