1993 Chevrolet Tracker Oil Smells Gas Spits Sputters Bad Does First Got Had

my oil smells like gas it spits and sputters like it has bad gas but it does not. When i first got it ,it had a 1994 motor but it blew up so i put another 1 in it,its a 1993 just not running right please tell me what i done that would make the oil and gas mix.

did you tune it up before installation???

did you do a compression test before installing to be sure you have a good engine
