What sounds like rather minor collision damage should not have created a condition that breaks starters. Considering the starter is bolted to the block, is there block boss damage where the bolts are not aligned, and are you using the support bracket at the motor end of the starter, the one by the front engine mount. Some care has to be taken as to not tighten the support bracket first, or a misalignment can occur.
