what is the oil life index? and why is the number going down each time i start the car? for instance it was 78 yesterday and is now 75 today?

That is oil life as to % left. starts at 100% to 0%

so then if i am correct it has nothing to do with the oil pressure? i was told that it did. but from what you are saying it sounds like the number is dropping because i am leaking oil or just burning it right.

wow, i really don't know anything so please forgive my ignorance on this topic. so oil has life? meaning? and i changed the oil pressure switch could it have anything to do with that?

No oil pressure switch has nothing to do with oil life it is an electronic counter to say when time for next oil change

one more if you do not mind sir, if i lower the idle will it save me gas without doing any damage? the car seems to idle at 1000 rpm's is that good or bad.
