What is the purpoise of the thermostac on an automobile?

My car is leaking coolant on the driver side. When the
car stops there's no leaking on the ground. Help please!

A thermostat is similar to the thermostat in your house. It keeps the engine temp within a set temperature range to prevent it from overheating. If you are leaking coolant, check for where it is coming from and let me know.
