Exhaust suddenly extremely loud and lost acceleration. Why loss of acceleration?

Son driving car when suddenly exhaust became very loud; either hole in muffler, converter or pipe.
Same time he lost ability to accelerate. Only able to drive 10 mph.

What would cause loss of acceleration?
