I have a 1993 Buick Lasabre and its been sitting up for a couple of years and for the past few months I have got it started and did a small amount of work to get it going such as battery spark plugs and wires. Just recently got a service engine light on but before this the car did a some occasional bogging down hesitation feel during regular driving and any speed. Just yesterday received a service engine light. Took it to auto part store to scan codes. The scan would not work from connection. What can cause it not to read and what are my possible problems based on how its acting.

Does the check engine lite work? You can check codes yourself, use jumper wire between A & B terminals at data link connector, key on, no crank. The mil starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. I've seen mils that wouldn't work, maybe the bulb was burned out or poor connection? I used a scanner at the datalink connector, looked at live engine data, looked good to me.

Use a gage and check fuel pressure. Some of the national brand autostores used to loan out a fuel pressure gage.

Possible mass air flow sensor is dirty or check for leaks in the fresh air tube between the sensor and the throttle body. Also check the vacuum hoses for leaks. If any air gets into the engine that doesn't go through the mass air flow sensor, the Engine Computer won't know it's there so it won't command enough fuel to go with it.
