Do you see wet spots on the ground? If not, the most likely suspect would be a leaking cylinder head gasket. That can allow coolant to enter the combustion chamber and go out the exhaust.

To verify that, your mechanic can do a chemical test at the radiator, or you can add a small bottle of dark purple dye to the coolant, then check with a black light after a few days. The dye will show up as a bright yellow stain that you can follow back to the source. If you find the dye inside the tail pipe, suspect the head gasket.
