im putting new piston rings in my 2.422r toyota pickup and i cant get the piston in the cylinder do i have to hone the cylinder first. i have the ring compressor tool. i need some help. thanks

Check for carbon inside the ring grooves that prevents the rings from being fully compressed. Try sticking a ring in the cylinder without the piston. If the ends overlap or have no gap you either have rings for a bored out cylinder, they were packaged wrong, (which has been known to happen), or you have custom rings that are supposed to be filed as necessary to fit. Be sure you don't have the top and second rings mixed up if there were two packages. Some have a bevel on top of the inside circumference and some have a bevel on the bottom.
