are there any alernative ways to remove a steering wheel without buying a steering wheel puller

Nope. If you have a Harbor Freight Tools store nearby, they have a kit for about ten bucks. Don't try banging on the shaft. It is a two-piece shaft with a shear pin. Banging on the shaft can easily break that pin.
