Why does my 92 Ciera stumble and backfire when I step hard on the pedal in while the automatic transmission is downsifting to first gear?

The car has 360,000 miles.

Something that year and mileage, you may need to take it easier? When was the last tune-up? Any mil codes? timing issue? If you think it is a tranny issue, I'm not sure how to help.
