When my headlights are off, everything works fine. With headlights on, when I hit the brakes, my taillights go out and the brake lights don't light up. I'm really hoping there could be a simple solution because I can't afford a wiring diagnostic. Any thoughts?

This is typical of a bad ground on the rear lights. Look first for a broken or corroded wire. If the car has a trailer wiring harness, check if someone used "Scotch Lok" connectors to make the splices. Those don't keep moisture out, and that will result in a corroded connection.
