1992 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L Manual trans. Squealing noise coming form transmission or transfercase area. Sounds like a squeaky fan belt but it is not in the engine. I heard the noise while driving so I pushed in the clutch and turned the key of. With motor dead and jeep coasting noise continued until I stopped moving. Noise comes and goes does not do it all the time. But it seems to be happening more offten now.

1) Check fluids in both units

2) Inspect your Universal Joints ("U" Joints). If you do not know how, or how many you got, let me know and I will talk you thru it. Even how to replace them yourself! Not too hard, tools EZily found!

Many times they squeak louder, either applying throttle, or letting off (mine usually do it letting off).

Imma CJ kinda guy, yours are very similar to mine.I can send Real Pics too!

I'm here to help, this is my hobby!

Come back with "puzzled look" or tell me what's going on.

I finally found the time to work on it. I found that one of my u-joints was going out, and all the others were getting dry. So I replaced the CV Ball-socket-seal, one new u-joint and lubed the rest of them up. However I don't believe that the joints were the source of my problem. My transmission was getting very low on oil. I topped off the oil, and discovered that that detent switch had bare wires. So all in all the problem has been resolved and I was able to find some other much needed services. I thank you for your post it was very helpful.

I RECENTLY HAD A NO OIL ISSUE, LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE WENT CRAZY WITH THE SILICONE GASKET STUFF--2 NICE GLOBS WERE IN THE OIL HOLES/ SLOTS, OF THE TRANSFER-CASE. EVEN THOUGH I WAS TOPPED OFF, OIL COULD NOT GET INTO THE TAIL-SHAFT PART. THIS "WAS" A TAPERED BEARING, ALONG WITH THIS "WAS" A TAIL-SHAFT AND "WAS" A HOUSING (BEFORE THE RACE SPUN AND RUINED IT). DEFINITELY, NOT A GOOD DEAL, WHICH I DID NOT SEE COMING---BUT YOU! NEED A CHILTON REPAIR MANUAL, AND NEED TO READ THRU THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SECTION, AND STAY ON TOP OF EVERYTHING--RELIGIOUSLY!----I HAVE 2 JEEPS, 34 YEAR OLD IS MR. JEEP, '77 CJ 5)HAD THE "NO OIL" ISSUE, AND 65 YEAR OLD "WILLY", MY '46 WILLYS----BOTH ARE DRIVERS, BOTH HAVE BEEN MY BUDDY A LONG TIME, I EXPECT MY DAUGHTER WITH INHERIT BOTH ONE DAY, SHE HELPED RESTORE HIM WHEN SHE WAS 2-3, AS CAPABLE OF DRIVING HIM AS I(3 SPEED MANUAL), AS WELL CHANGING A TIRE, UNDER HOOD MAINTENANCE, AND OPERATING 4x4 IN NEEDED CONDITIONS---SHE WAS CAPABLE OF ALL OF THIS, AT AGE 10, WHEN SHE STAYED WITH ME FOR HER SUMMER VISITS. MY PLAN WAS TO GET HER DRIVERS LICENSE IN HIM, HAVE HER CRANK HIM UP WITH THE HANDCRANK, DRIVE W/ OUT ANY SEATBELTS (NONE IN MANY RIGS BEFORE 1963, AND LEGAL, NOT TO HAVE THEM!) HER EVIL MOTHER BEAT ME TO IT, IN A REGULAR CAR. KNOWING HOW MUCH I WANTED TO HAVE THAT MOMENT. HER BIRTHDAY IS MY HOOD NUMBER. SHE AND MY GRANDSON VISITED AT CHRISTMAS, AND SHE DROVE HIM THEN. THE DRIVETRAIN ON HIM IS ORIGINAL, ALL I HAVE EVER DONE IS REPLACE THE SEALS. JEEPS WILL LAST FOREVER, IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM!THE MEDIC
